The Passing of William P. Orien, DPM

It is with sadness to myself and the profession
that we lost an icon, Dr. William P. Orien. His
funeral is scheduled for Sunday Dec 17, 2017 at
Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood,
California. at 1 p.m.

Bill was the activist who put biomechanics on the
national map. Mert L Root, DPM, John H. Weed,
DPM, and William P Orien, DPM and their book,
"Normal and Abnormal Function of the Foot" became
the bible for biomechanics.

I met Bill in 1969 and he inspired me to become a
podiatrist. He arranged a personal meeting with
Leonard Levy, DPM which led to my acceptance to
CCPM the same year. I was privileged to work with
Mert, Bill, and John throughout my school years
and continued this relationship.

Bill Orien was smart, witty, kind, and always
wanted to share his knowledge. I remember our
social times together with Sharron, his lovely
wife at their home in West Los Angeles. I was
always made to feel special.

Bill's natural ability for lecturing has made it
possible for so many Podiatrists to learn,
understand, and practice the art of biomechanics.
Bill was instrumental in formation of the Am
Board of Podiatric Orthopedics.

Until recent, Bill was still working in the Santa
Barbara area with an orthopedic group
specializing in biomechanics. How admirable!

Bill will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Until this da , my wife, Eileen and I thank Bill
and Sharron for leading us down this wonderful
pathway of podiatric medicine and surgery.

Bill is gone but will never be forgotten. Goodbye
my dear friend,

Jack Morgan, DPM, Los Angeles, CA
