NY Podiatrist Comments on Gross Medical Video

A video posted to Reddit will captivate even the most jaded fans of gross medical videos. To get an expert's take on the mysterious object, INSIDER spoke with podiatrist Dr. Hillary Brenner. She stressed that it's impossible to identify the object from a video alone, but she  suggested it could be a wood splinter.

Foreign object and Dr. Hillary Brenner

Brenner told INSIDER that she has seen foreign objects puncture the skin of the foot in one place and come out in a completely different location. Though she hasn't personally witnessed an object come out through the top of the foot, she said it was possible this particular thorn/splinter went through the bottom of the foot and worked its way to the top. She also took note of the golden pus that's visible near the 1:07 mark. "That's [a sign of] an infection that  has been brewing," Brenner said. "It has been in there for a long time."

Woman Loses Her Toenails After Getting a Popular 'Fish Pedicure'

For about a decade, people have been using "fish pedicures" in order to get rid of the dead skin on their feet. The way the process works is simple: someone who is suffering from an excess amount of dead or flaky skin sticks their feet into a tank of Garra Rufa - an omnivorous fish that enjoys nothing more than a tasty bit of human skin to munch on. The fish eat the dead parts but leave the healthy flesh.

Dr. Shari Lipner, a dermatologist at Weill Cornell Medicine hospital, investigated the case of an unnamed woman whose toenails had started falling off her foot for no apparent reason. Writing in JAMA Dermatology, Dr. Lipner explained: "A woman in her 20s presented with a 6-month history of abnormal toenails. She denied pain, previous trauma, or running or walking on paved road. She had no family history of nail disorders, no medical problems, no history of major illness or high fever, and no vaccinations or use of medications in the past year." However, she did note that the patient "reported having a fish pedicure some months prior to the start of her nail abnormalities."

RE: Outrageous Shoe Accessory of the Day

Remember the bemused reaction you had to the selfie stick the first time you saw one? Remember how that feeling gradually changed to begrudging acceptance as they became standard issue over the months that followed? Get ready for the next creation in that line of “are they kidding?” The iPhone foot mount for the person who doesn’t want pockets in their clothing will be everywhere in 2019. Maybe.

Pretty "phone"y, don't you think?

The oddball creation was shown off by high-end fashion designer John Galliano as part of his latest show in Paris. Galliano is the creative director of fashion house Maison Margiela. The shoe/iPhone holder combo is part of the fashion house’s “neo-digital” autumn/winter 2018 range. Apparently, the phone holder can attach to a variety of different shoes, which would make it a versatile accessory.

RE: Mrs. Malaprops Returns

A patient comes in with toenails that have turned green. She asks me "Is it gangrene?"  No, I said, "It's wintergreen."

Perfect for St. Patrick's Day?

I had correctly deduced that she soaks her feet in wintergreen alcohol (having seen this before).  The oddest part is that she didn't make the connection herself.

RE: Outrageous Cannibal Foot Story of the Day

If you could taste human flesh in an ethical way, would you? It’s the kind of question you ask after watching Silence of the Lambs stoned. No matter how you respond, you never expect anyone to hold you to your answer. But in a recent Reddit post, user IncrediblyShinyShart shared the story of a motorcycle crash that put him face-to-face with the macabre hypothetical. When a car hit his bike and sent him careening into a nearby forest, his foot was shattered to the point that he would never walk on it again. When the doctor asked if he wanted to amputate, his one question was, “Can I keep it?”

Not for the faint of heart! (Photo: IncrediblyShinyShart )

The doctor said yes. Three weeks after the accident, Shiny, who prefers to remain anonymous, invited 10 of his most open-minded friends to a special brunch. They ate apple strudel, quiche puff pastries, fruit tarts, and chocolate cake. They drank gin lemonade punches and mimosas. And then the main course came out: fajita tacos made from Shiny's severed human limb.
