Nail Salons Put Patients at Risk for Infections: TX Podiatrist

Dr. Anderone's statement, "when cosmetologists
aren't following regulations, they could be
putting your body at risk" is certainly true.
Many short cut salons don't perform proper
infection control practices and do put their
clientele at risk. However, it is not true that
all nail technicians are to be painted with the
same broad brush-which many of you do. Many
technicians are taking advanced courses to expand
their awareness on safety practices and then only
perform safe practices.

Rather than warning patients "do not go to nail
salons," it is more positive and productive to
make suggestions on how to choose a safe salon
for their services. Good sanitation and infection
control are observable and verifiable by clients
in nail salons as well as anywhere else. IF they
know what to look for. First, observe the
environment.

A salon that is not obeying the rules will
usually be messy, even have debris in the floor.
Do they clean their work area after every
service? Second, do the professionals wear gloves
AND change all PPTs between clients? Third, are
there advanced training certificates on the wall?
Basic learning from nail school is not enough as
they do not train how a technician must protect
at risk and all clients from cross contamination.
Fourth, a salon that uses an autoclave/pouches
for their instruments can be counted on to have
higher level safety practices,

Why not find a safe nail salon to send your
patients to for services? In turn, they will send
you their patients = new patients will be the
result. You know your clients are going to have
pedicures, so why not send them to where you know
they will be safe? Look for salons with advanced
nail technicians or medical nail technicians? Or
hire one for your practice.

Truth is that nail technicians who perform safe
cosmetic services in salons can be your best
source for new patients. The old saying is, if
you can't fight them, join them and make changes.
It works for everyone!
