Retrocalcaneal Bursectomy
Query: Retrocalcaneal Bursectomy
The patient has a diagnosed retrocalcaneal
bursitis with Achilles tendon degeneration. The
surgeon fully excised the retrocalcaneal bursa
and excised/repaired the necrotic Achilles
tendon. What procedure codes would be billed in
this case?

Codingline Response: If the surgeon has
documented that there was debridement and repair
of the Achilles tendon, I would recommend CPT
27654 (repair, secondary, Achilles tendon, with
or without graft). The bursectomy is incidental
to this and should not be billed separately.
