Excision of an Os Peroneum

Query: Excision of an Os Peroneum

How would one code the excision of an os
peroneum?

Codingline Response: CPT does not list a code
that specifically reflect excision of accessory
sesamoids (only CPT 28315 for sesamoidectomy,
first toe). It is common to bill the accessory
sesamoid excision as a "partial ostectomy" of
the primary bone it is associated with - in this
case, the base of the 5th metatarsal.

I would recommend you code the procedure as CPT
28122 (partial excision [craterization,
saucerization, sequestrectomy, or
diaphysectomy], metatarsal).

If you feel uncomfortable billing this code, and
I can't see why, you always have the option of
billing CPT 28899, unlisted foot code, and send
in documentation for support.
