HIPAA Security Rule and Windows XP (Robert Steinberg, DPM)

Dr. Steinberg is correct. I didn't have space in
my letter to the editor to go into details, but
the correct procedure for upgrading any
operating system is to install it on a spare
computer or laptop, and test that all of your
programs and hardware (printers, scanners, x-
rays machines, etc.) work with the new version.
Having said that, I have not found any program
or any of my hardware that has worked under
Windows 7 which didn't work under Windows 8. I
did have one very old multifunction device that
worked under Windows XP which did not easily
work under windows 7, but there was a way to fix
it, and it works under Windows 8.

As to web-based programs not working under
Windows 8, if they worked under Windows 7, there
are simple ways to make them work on Windows 8.
It is easiest to use an alternative browser like
Chrome. If you like IE, there are 2 different
versions included with Windows 8. Try both. If
that doesn't work, you can set IE to work as if
it is an older version on specific websites.
Just hit f12, and select a compatibility mode.

Windows 8 is very different than Windows 7. It
may take a little training to get used to it. I
recommend installing it on your personal laptop
or home computer and get to know it before
installing it at work. Youtube has a few
excellent tutorials on the differences between
Windows 7 and 8, which can save you a lot of
time and aggravation. Perhaps buy copies for
your staff to use at home as they learn the
system.
