Cimetidine and Verruca
RE: Cimetidine and Verruca From: Jon Purdy, DPM I wanted to report a quick personal case involving mosaic type verruca in an HIV infected male treated with cimetidine. I had a 42 year old male present with an almost total involvement of the plantar surface of both feet which was painful when ambulating. At the time he was managing a case of shingles. I coordinated with his treating physician to take him off of one of his HIV meds that would potentially interact with cimetidine.
I started him on 800mg tid. At week four, he presented to the office with complete resolution of his verruca and shingles. I could kick myself for not taking pictures. I have used cimetidine as a secondary option for many years, and have had many dramatic results. There is a recent 8-year retrospective (N=216) article in JAPMA; May/June 2005 by Barry Mullen, DPM, et al., looking at this use of cimetidine. I would advise all to take a look, do some research, and consider this encouraging treatment regimen.
