Parity: The Only Way is By Getting an MD Degree (Dan Klein, DPM)
I disagree with Dr. Dan Klein. I think if you think that you need and MD or DO after your name to get respect or become successful, then that is what you believe in and that is what you will get. I can only talk about my own success. I have heard all of that while in residency and fellowship. It was very disappointing to hear that from a lot of attendings (not all) but fortunately, I decided not to listen to the chatter.
I have been in practice for 8 years and have been extremely successful. I turn 1 office to 2 and building my 3rd location + plus my own surgery center. I have been invited to the "Doctors TV Show" 5 times and they have never asked me or even mention why I have a DPM after my name. They even sent a producer to our Nepal mission trip and it was aired on national TV. The segment had one of the highest views as per the producer on the show.
I have had patients traveling from most states as well as Canada and Australia, and recently from Egypt to come and get their bunions done by me. So, do I need an MD or DO after my name? No. It's about being the best you can be at what you do. It about doing what other have not done and it's about being passionate about what you do and give the best care to your patients.
If you think you are not good enough, than you are not. It's how you act and perform. I get referrals from MDs and DOs it has never been an issue.
I am not the only one by the way I know a ton of podiatrists out there doing very well and growing and serving their community. This is exactly what we don't need to teach our residents and students.
