As to the various responses to this matter it
seems that our larger podiatric conferences
(ACFAS/APMA/FPMA/NYSPMA/CPMA/Midwest, etc.)
should have panels on this issue at their
respective meetings for the practicing DPMs as
well as our resident DPMs. There is a cadre of us
who have been in orthopedic surgical practices
for many years as well as those with few years of
experience in these type practices.
During my 23 years active duty in the USAF, the
DPMs were in the orthopedic clinics/operating
rooms with MD/DO orthopedists every day. When I
retired from the USAF in 2004 I joined an
existing orthopedic practice with three
orthopedic surgeons. To be honest, I only looked
at this option because of my years always working
with orthopedists,not in competition against
them. Back then there were a few DPM's in
orthopaedic practices but today there are more
than you would think. In our practice we now have
5 orthopedic surgeons,two Ortho
PAs,neurologist,pain management specialist, and
two DPMs.
Years ago, I thought that this type of practice
set up was ideal with the three years residencies
coming down the road,and the advanced surgical
training our DPMs have now. For example, the DPM
we hired this past May has completed a three year
surgical residency and is capable of performing
all of the lower extremity surgery that an
orthopaedic foot and ankle surgeon would perform
for this practice. Our DPM community needs to be
aware of the tremendous opportunity for our
highly trained surgical DPMs as well as for our
general podiatrists who also can complement the
orthopedic surgical practice.
Access to a larger referral base of patients,
share holding in surgical centers,ancillary
income from physical therapy, MRI, bone density,
vascular testing, ultrasound, etc. are much
easier to accomplish in larger practices such as
these. I am always surprised when at a large
podiatric conference where there are panels on
potential work opportunities for our graduates of
highly trained surgical residents, there is very
little, if at all, discussions about DPMs in
orthopedic surgical practices,which in my mind,
is critical for our future survival.
I would like to coordinate or discuss with other
DPMs in orthopaedic practices and find out how
many of us are actually working in this type of
practice environment. Please feel free to email
me if you so desire. I also challenge our
scientific coordinators at our large meetings to
have a panel discussion for our target audience
of practicing and future DPMs.

IN Podiatric Resident Named Ascension Service Commitments Champion
Ascension St. Vincent first-year resident, Nathan Jackson, DPM, was recently selected as the Service Commitments Champion for the state of Indiana, a rare honor recognizing exceptional service, teamwork, and patient-centered care. In the past four years, only one other resident across all specialties statewide has received this award.

The recognition was based on several documented clinical actions, including his role in a prolonged inpatient code response and his decision to return to the hospital after a full surgical day to provide urgent wound care in order to prevent further limb loss. Nursing leadership at Ascension St. Vincent specifically cited his professionalism, humility, and commitment to whole-person care.
