I am in complete agreement that a license
(differentiated from degree) in podiatric
medicine should be the same full license as
MD/DO. As was correctly stated, the
institutional credentialing process controls
what any specialty can and cannot do; ensuring
that no podiatrist or orthopedist or
dermatologist or vascular surgeon does brain
surgery. However, in support of full licensure,
the statement of Dr. Hultman and many others
that “The reality is that the end product of
our education and training is
indistinguishable; thus the license a DPM gets
should be the same as the license an MD gets,"
is simply a fantasy (at least the part about
the end product).
There is no question that podiatric medical
education is a million light years ahead of
what it was thirty-five years ago. But as a
faculty member in a medical school for the past
19 years, the assertion that there is
equivalence (work load, performance measures,
hours, etc.) in the student experience in
medical school and podiatric medical school
continues to elude me, and I don’t understand
why anyone thinks that a written syllabus or
school catalogue proves that equivalence.
Yet, I maintain that the school experience
doesn’t have to be equivalent, as obviously
evidenced by the tremendous gains podiatry has
made. The cold hard fact is that except for
legislative, insurance, and other business
related parameters where the full license is
essential, and deserved, the practice of
podiatric medicine and surgery is unique to the
DPM, and is one that I personally cherish. I
think that prospective podiatric medical
students may do better to fully research their
career choice so that defending their training
(and degree) stops being the emotional brick
wall that blinds many of them to the value of
the services they will eventually provide.
Finally, the practical advantages of a full
license are sorely needed, and should be fought
for…but there has to be a better way than
asserting equivalence at the undergraduate
level, which will never be accepted by the
MD/DO establishment. The recent plans announced
for podiatrists to enroll in combined physician
assistant/DPM programs being developed also
seem to me to be nothing but the end of the DPM
as PA opportunities will probably way outnumber
DPM opportunities in a few short years, if not
already true.

OBITUARIES
RE: The Passing of Don Falknor, DPM
Dr. Don Falknor passed away July 9. He was 75 years old and died peacefully at home after years of a heroic battle with cancer. Don was an inspiration and mentor to all. He was a leader personally and professionally - from being the first podiatrist allowed in the Memorial Hospital system, to his roles as Wound Center Director, Past President of the State Board of Examiners, Residency Director, and President of the Texas Podiatric Medical Foundation & Mission.

I am saddened, like so many of us, to hear of the passing of Dennis Shavelson. Dennis and I lectured at many seminars. What strikes me about him is how dedicated he was to the art of biomechanics. For many years, he owned his own lab and would run seminars at his lab. My last conversation with him was when he called me and let me know that he would coach me on biomechanics.
He also let me know that he no longer had his lab, but was solely interested in promoting all that he had learned about it to as many of his colleagues as possible. That was real dedication.
