NY Podiatrist Discusses Salon Safety Concerns
According to the Centers for Disease Control, a whopping 97 percent of nail salon footbaths tested in one study contained the bacteria M. fortuitum, an icky bug that can cause scarring boils on the skin. Fungal infections are another potential problem. “Fungal infections may infect the skin, like with athletes foot, or the nails, which can be extremely difficult to get rid of,” says Rebecca Pruthi, DPM, a board certified podiatric physician and surgeon practicing in New York City. “You can also contract viruses from nail salons—the result of which may be plantar warts, caused by HPV. Plantar warts are not only unsightly, but they can become very painful and can spread to other parts of the body.”

When it comes to making sure non-disposable instruments are safe, “disinfection and sterilization are not the same,” explains Pruthi. An autoclave sterilization device, which is now available in better nail salons, is guaranteed to kill any bug and is much more effective than disinfecting solution (like that blue stuff you might see at a hair salon or barber shop), which doesn’t kill all bacterial spores.

NY Podiatrist Discusses Prevention of Diabetes

"Thompson Reuters and Duke studies completed about four years ago found that a once-a-year visit to a podiatrist by a patient with diabetes resulted in an almost 50 percent decrease in diabetic foot ulcers and amputations. So it’s important for diabetics to see a podiatrist or have a primary care doctor look at their feet. The diabetic should have a baseline foot exam and lower extremity examination on at least a yearly basis. Diabetics with peripheral neuropathy or circulation or nerve disorders should see a podiatrist a couple of times a year. There are patients in that population who come and see me three times a year for nails and calluses," says Dr. Hurley.

On April 1, Stacia Jones, DPM joined the Foot and Ankle Specialists of the Mid-Atlantic, LLC (FASMA) at its Greenbelt and Annapolis Divisions. Dr. Jones received her doctorate from Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine. She completed 3 years of extensive surgical training in foot and ankle reconstructive surgery in New York City. During her senior year, Dr. Jones had the distinction of being named Chief Resident.

Upon graduating from the residency program, Dr. Jones moved to Harrisburg, PA, where she spent 3 years providing podiatric medical and surgical services to patients in Central Pennsylvania. Dr. Jones relocated to Maryland to be closer to her family and friends. Her areas of expertise include management of diabetic wound care, forefoot reconstructive surgery, pediatrics, and sports medicine injuries. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Podiatric Medicine.

North Carolina May Eliminate Licensing for Podiatrists
Lawmakers are considering a proposal to eliminate state licensing requirements for a dozen occupations ranging from podiatrists to public librarians. The bill will be considered Tuesday by a joint legislative committee, which could recommend that it be taken up by the Legislature during its session starting in late April.
Sen. Andy Wells, R-Catawba, said that too much licensing hurts the economy and argued that consumers already do a good job of weeding out bad professionals through online reviews and other means. Asked specifically about eliminating the licensing requirement for podiatry, a medical specialty, he said: "The question is whether they should have their own board. We don't have a separate board for every medical specialty there is."

Despite Physician Objections, Nurse Scope of Care Increases
Despite objections from physician groups, many states have enacted legislation that expands the range of care nurses are allowed to provide to their patients. According to The Washington Post, both West Virginia and Florida have recently enacted laws that allow advance practice nurses to establish primary care practices independent of physician oversight and to prescribe medications more freely, expanding the list of states that allow nearly full scope of practice to nurse practitioners to 21.
States that have passed legislation expanding the range of services that nurses can provide cite a need for primary care in rural areas that generally do not attract enough physicians to meet patient needs. These measures passed despite strident opposition from the American Medical Association, which maintains that nurses should coordinate with physicians as part of an integrated care team.

5. Check-in at check-out
If you have staff dedicated to checking patients out, they can play a hugely beneficial role by simply and sincerely asking each patient how their visit went. When the practice messes up (and nobody's perfect), having somebody listening to the complaint can make a huge difference. If the patient is really upset, the administrator can personally offer a heartfelt apology.

When evaluating patients who have gait disturbances, especially after accidents, injuries, or surgeries, if the general examination is negative for gross discrepancies such as neurological or musculo-skeletal defects, look to the rear foot and ankle function for subtle changes that change gait function.

I would like to respond to the observations by Name Withheld. Firstly, perhaps if the name was not withheld, there might be some interest in the advertised job! Secondly, I have been scouring job opportunities for some months. It is highly likely I would have seen and applied for such a vacancy. I do not recall receiving a response. Further, I would encourage greater transparency when a job is advertised. Please, let the job seeker know from the ad what the job specifications are, together with a proposed salary.
I have now visited a very generous handful of offices. I will spend time answering job ads, dutifully sending out a resume/CV and cover letter. It is truly shocking how often...

Three-year residencies get full indirect and direct funding. For year 4, and even year 5, the hospital will get half the direct funding (resident salary, etc.) and all the indirect funding. This year is still usually profitable so long as the number of Medicare patients is relatively high.
Fellowships, the way I understand it, are being paid at the same rate as a 4th year (resident), although they must be CPME-approved, not just by ACFAS or other organizations. At one time fellowships were only paid for geriatrics and community health programs. I understand that fellowships are being reimbursed, but I have never seen the official Federal Register's documentation of that.
