KS Podiatrist Discusses Toe Cramps
You know that strange thing when your toes start twitching and involuntarily twisting around each other? Or when you wake up in the middle of the night with your foot flexed, immovable, and shooting with pain? What is with those cramps? The path to fewer painful spasms begins with your shoes, says Dr. Phyllis Ragley, a podiatrist in Lawrence, Kansas. "It's crucial to find a pair that's right for your body's unique mechanics." Ragley advises choosing a shoe that fits your arch and is neither too stiff nor too flexible.
|
|
Dr. Phyllis Ragley |
Ragley also recommends non-weight-bearing stretches like wiggling your toes, spreading them out, and pointing and flexing your feet (give these four foot stretches a try). "It's crucial as we age to move the feet around in a gentle way to maintain a range of motion," she says. "And adding some massages and warm foot baths will help to relieve the muscles."

CT Podiatrist Charged with DUI
A Fairfield podiatrist was charged with drunken driving Friday after police said he was found slumped in his car at a city intersection. Dr. Amarjit Chhatwal, of Fairfield, had a blood-alcohol level of 0.1663, more than twice the legal limit, police said. Chhatwal was charged with driving under the influence and released after posting a $500 bond.

12 Ways Physicians Can Maintain Sanity - Part 1
In pursuit of offering expert and effective patient care, physicians sometimes shortchange their own health and then discover, too late, that the path back to healthy living is quite challenging. Why not offer great care and maintain your sanity as well as health?
Here are 12 tiny changes you can put into practice now to maintain and/or improve your health:
1. Sleep 8 hours per night.
2. Plan vacations for the next three years. A study at the State University of New York found that men who vacation every year reduce their risk of dying from cardiovascular disease. So start dreaming about where you'd like to go, and in the meantime, take time off now and then to do cool things with your kids.

Query: Wound Biologics Wasted Product
My representative for Epifix says we now have to document the ‘waste’ of the product not used/applied to the product supply code (e.g., Q4131-JW). How is that ‘waste’ measured (i.e., a circular product measures 2.4 cm in diameter and the ulcer measures 1.0cm X 0.5cm)?
Gary Friedlander, DPM, Phoenix, AZ
Response: I suggest you document how many square centimeters of product were applied to the ulcer and how many square centimeters were wasted. Your product is a circle with a diameter of 2.4 cm. Its radius is 1.2 cm. The area of a circle is pi X radius squared. 1.2 cm squared is 1.44 cm. So now we multiple 1.44 cm by pi and get 4.5 sq. cm. Your product is 4.5 sq. cm. Your wound has an area of 0.5 sq. cm.
If you only cover the wound with no overlap, I suggest you document that you used 0.5 sq. cm. of product and wasted 4.0 sq. cm. of product. If you used more than that because of overlapping the wound, adjust accordingly. I suggest purchasing and billing for the smallest size available that will cover your wound.

From: Daniel Pollack, DPM
I frequently prescribe Nitro-Bid patches 2% ointment for mild frostbite cases, Raynaud's, and peripheral arterial disease, and achieve consistent positive results. For tendinopathies that did not improve with standard RICE Protocols, and NSAIDs, I use a high intensity laser therapy (40w) to increase vascularity and again achieve consistent positive results. Knowing the key to healing is adequate blood flow, I only recently started using nitro patches on a handful of patients for tendon issues. My results are inconclusive at this point, but I don't see why it wouldn't help, and will likely be prescribing it more often in the future.

I think you are asking the wrong question. You should be asking yourself why you are participating in Amerigroup?
Robert S. Steinberg, DPM, Schaumburg, IL
Do the surgery. I've been paid way too much for some cases and way too little for others. In the end, it all washes out. We have an obligation to our patients.

From: Freddie Edelman, DPM
If you do the procedure and get your $237 and all goes well, there is no problem except that you are underpaid. Your liability, of course, does not go away with underpayment, so if things don't go so well, how will you feel spending time on litigation? If I make a charitable contribution (and that is what this procedure will be), I like to choose the charity.
I would not treat this problem, because that enables the insurer to continue to underpay. You always have the right to get a pre-approval and have your fee as part of it.
Freddie Edelman, DPM, Syracuse, NY
