Dancers Can Strengthen Foot Muscles: GA Podiatrist

When a dancer is described as having strong, supple feet, the topic of conversation is usually pointework. But well-developed feet are important for all dancers, regardless of genre. The muscles in the feet provide stability for all movement, and are particularly important for jumping. Consistent attention to working through the foot is the best way to ensure that they are able to protect the body and maximize jumps.

Dr. Perry Julien

Training foot muscles is as important as developing the rest of the body. Although extra isolation exercises can augment strength, there is no substitute for a daily routine that includes footwork, notes Perry Julien, DPM, past president of the American Academy of Podiatric Sports Medicine, who treats dancers from Atlanta Ballet. “The muscles get stronger over time with correct training,” he says.

PODIATRISTS IN THE COMMUNITY

TX Podiatrist Spearheads Shoe Drive for Indigent Children

One hundred children attending the Webb County Head Start Program, in poverty-stricken Rio Bravo, will sport new tennis shoes this school year. It's due to the generosity of local and area sponsors.

Dr. Daniel Bell

"We are just trying to help out as many kids as we can," said Daniel Bell, a local podiatrist and surgeon. He spoke as little hands reached up to receive the shoeboxes volunteers distributed at the Rio Bravo Community Center on Saturday. Judging by their smiles upon receiving the treasure, the children and their parents were grateful. This is the second time Bell, of Laredo's Family Foot Center, and the Head Start program serve indigent families.

"I got the idea last year," Bell said, "after I received an influx of kids with foot problems, problems that could easily be prevented by just changing shoes." After talking to the children's parents, Bell found that the problems appeared to be caused by ill-fitting, "pass-me-down" shoes going from generation to generation, and from using the same shoes, year after year. "None of these are good for kids," Bell said. "Children grow and every child is different."

APMA SCIENTIFIC MEETING

Record-Breaking Meeting Ends With Early Anticipation of Hawaii

The 2007 APMA Scientific Meeting now enters the annals of podiatric medicine and surgery as the largest and most successful educational event ever. More than 2,000 DPM’s and 400 exhibitors filled the massive Philadelphia Convention Center with enthusiasm and spirit.

Typical of the success was the sold out PM Podiatry Hall of Fame Luncheon honoring APMA Deputy Executive Director Jay Levrio, PhD and CPMA Executive Director Jon Hultman, DPM, MBA. Over 300 attendees heard entertaining roasts by APMA Executive Director Glenn Gastwirth, DPM and Codingline Editor Harry Goldsmith, DPM. Proceeds from the luncheon benefit the APMA Education Foundation's Student Endowment Fund.

Lectures were often standing room only, including over 500 podiatrists who attending the practice management track presented by the American Academy of Podiatric Practice Management. Even as DPM’s celebrated this record-breaking meeting, many are already excited about next July’s meeting in Hawaii.

Query: Lymphostasis Verruciformis (Elephantiasis Nostra Verrucosa)

I have a 60 y/o white diabetic male patient with longstanding ulcerative and Charcot changes in his right (and left) foot. He had dorsal ulcerations which we treated with Apligraf four years ago. Since then he has developed these (pictured) skin, soft tissue and osseous changes. Multiple biopsies have ruled out verrucous carcinoma or other underlying malignancies. Recent multiple MRI studies and biopsies have failed to reveal current osteomyelitis.

Lymphostasis Verruciformis (Elephantiasis Nostra Verrucosa)

Final pathological diagnosis appears to be lymphostasis verruciformis (elephantiasis nostra verrucosa) overlying chronic Charcot changes. Multiple dermatology consultations with various treatment regimens (including topical and systemic retinoids) have been unsuccessful in limiting the spread of this condition. The patient and I have discussed many options including a mid-tarsal amputation. I would appreciate suggestions regarding topical treatments prior to any ablative procedure.

RESPONSES / COMMENTS

RE: Edward Weisman, DPM

I am saddened to report the passing of Edward Weisman, DPM of Chicago. He was a respected and beloved podiatrist in the Chicago area for 58 years and was certainly my inspiration for entering the profession. During his career, he was the Chief of the Diabetic Foot Clinic at Mt. Sinai Medical Center. He also headed the Podiatry Department at Forkosh Hospital. In addition to the everlasting love and respect that I have for this fine man, I would like to express my condolences to his sons, Mike and Larry, with whom I had the pleasure of attending podiatry school and calling my friends. I know their late father will have everlasting pride in them for their skill, dedication, and compassion, as well as for their continuing contributions to the profession he so dearly loved.

Rick Cowin, DPM, Orlando, FL

RE: 2007 APMA Scientific Meeting
From: Pat Caputo, DPM

I thought this was the best conference in my 23 years. It was well-organized. considering the size of the seminar, and the exhibitor section was amazing.

Pat Caputo, DPM, Red Bank, NJ, capstops@aol.com

RE: Keratotic Cracking Skin (Mark Aldrich, DPM)
From: Multiple Respondents

The patient and her clinical symptoms presented by Dr. Aldrich fit the profile of a condition called keratoderma climactericum or Haxthausen's disease. There is a current article by Al Kline, DPM, on the Podiatry Internet Journal on this condition. Dr. Aldrich can also simply type in the name of the condition into a search engine and get much information about diagnosis and treatment.

G Dock Dockery, DPM, Seattle, WA, gdockdockery@aol.com

By the photos and the history, I would lean towards psoriasis or eczema. A simple couple of 2 mm. punch biopsies should be confirmatory. Psoriatic lesions often will have some fungal secondary involvement.

Greg Mowen, DPM, gregmowen@comcast.net

I would bet she has a allergy to her leather footwear (tanning process), probably purchased within the past 5-6 monthsFrom the shape of her feet, it appears she wears/wore dress shoes. Try switching to a vegetable tanning process shoe or something synthetic. Most use a chrome tanning process that may be objectionable.

Rick E. Sevier, BS Ed., C. Ped., Tulsa, OK, alliedhealthed@sbcglobal.net
