OBITUARIES

Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

Dr. Irvin Kanat

On Saturday, September 1, 2012, Dr. Irv Kanat passed away, and podiatric medicine and surgery lost one of its greatest leaders in its history. For over five decades, Dr. Kanat was an eloquent and persuasive speaker at the APMA House of Delegates. He served as president of the APMA (1974-5) and chaired numerous committees, most recently the Bylaws Committee. Kanat was a founder of the American Board of Podiatric Surgery  and a long-time director of the Kern Hospital Residency Program. He was the recipient of the Distinguished Service Citation of the APMA in 1981 and was inducted into the PM Podiatry Hall of Fame in 1998.

The funeral will be held at Ira Kaufman chapel on Tuesday, September 4, 2012 at 10:00 AM. Our deepest condolences go out to Nancy and the family. To honor Dr. Kanat's memory, the majority of this issue is devoted to him in the form of tribute letters that we have received today.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 1

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM
From: H.F. “Bunny” Brown, III

My heart sank when I answered the telephone this morning. Nancy Kanat was on the other end of the line and said, “Bunny, you need to sit down.” She told me that Irv had passed away during the night and she found him this morning. Then we both spoke to each other between sobs and I could barely see through the tears whelping up in my eyes. I was making every effort to keep my composure for her, but we both knew we had lost a wonderful friend. Irv and I have been very close friends for many years and have served on many APMA Committees together. We had a very special bond that could never have been broken.

I won’t say we didn’t have differences of opinions on issues, but we always came together with a compromise we both could live with. Sometimes he would sway me to his side, and sometimes I would sway him to my side, BUT we were always friends to the end. Irv was a GREAT FRIEND a Mentor, and a Brother! June and I will miss him sorely, but will think fondly of him often. Our hearts go out to Nancy and their family.

I also send a special message to my dearly departed friend: IRV, may you rest in eternal peace. You will be missed sorely – but NEVER FORGOTTEN!

H.F. “Bunny” Brown, III, DPM, APMA Past President

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 2

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

The profession has lost a great leader, and the world has lost a wonderful human being. Dr. Kanat's contribution to the profession includes his efforts for podiatric education, both undergraduate and graduate, hospital relations, inter-professional activities, clinical practice, and every other aspect of podiatric medicine.

Dr. Kanat was a mensch. What is a mensch? A mensch is one of the highest accolades that can be bestowed upon a fellow human being. A mensch is someone who does for others, without having himself or herself in view. A mensch is tireless in working towards the welfare of others without trumpeting his or her own accomplishments. A mensch is a person who excels in motivating others, without extolling his or her own intrinsic worth. A mensch is someone who is kind and pleasant to others, even when they do not reciprocate these characteristics. Dr. Kanat has left his mark on all of us as an individual with the highest level of integrity, knowledge, compassion, and concern for others.

Arthur E. Helfand, DPM, Past President, APMA

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

A friend was lost today.  But he was more than a friend. A mentor was lost today. But he was more than a mentor. An APMA icon was lost today. But he was so much more than that. If anyone had the privilege to be in his company, be his friend, or hear his oratory, that person will never forget his presence nor so many of those moments. He was so insightful. He was all about podiatry and APMA. He had a strong family and a wife, Nancy, we all came to love. I will forever miss my friend, my mentor and the passion he had to see podiatry and APMA become what it is today.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 4

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

Podiatry lost a giant when Dr. Irv Kanat passed away this week. Irv was truly a scholar and a gentleman. He taught generations of podiatrists.  He sculpted young men and women into what we can proudly call “Today’s Podiatrist.” I did not have the good fortune to be trained by Irv, but envy those who were. I learned from Irv the power of the spoken word, the importance of advocating for ideas you believe would help our profession, and the obligation we all have to participate by representing our states at the APMA House of Delegates, serving on national and local committees and helping students and young members who are the next generation of podiatrists.

Anyone who attended an APMA House of Delegates in the past few decades witnessed a skilled orator in action whenever Irv went to a microphone. He calmly and politely presented facts and his opinions so persuasively that many delegates changed the way they planned to vote after listening to what Irv had to say. He never spoke in anger, and was never disrespectful; he just told us what he felt was best for our profession. Irv, your wit and wisdom will be sorely missed. The House of Delegates will never be the same. Goodbye, my friend.

Speaker, APMA House of Delegates

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

I was just notified that Irvin Kanat, DPM passed away today. In my opinion, he was one of the five most important figures in the world of podiatric medicine. His contributions to the residency training of podiatric surgeons lasted for over five decades. He will be dearly missed.

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

We have lost a giant in podiatry, Dr. Irvin Kanat. Irv, as most of us knew him, was an icon in our profession. We have always been extremely proud that he was from Michigan, but more importantly, he forged a path to elevate podiatry to the level it is today. His professional accomplishments were many, but none were as influential as the way he touched every podiatrist's life one way or another. Every once in a while, we have a few heroes among us for just a short time. Irv was one of those. He will be truly missed. We owe a great debt for what he has done for all of us. We will miss him greatly.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (OBITUARIES) - PART 8

RE: The Passing of Irvin O. Kanat, DPM

Dr. Kanat was a giant in our field whose presence will be missed. I was blessed to know him being one of his former residents. While at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc, Michigan, he taught me much  about podiatry and about myself. I am proud of those three years in residency. His father-like guidance shaped me and was always appreciated. He meant a lot to his residents and I know we meant a lot to him. You will be missed Dr. Kanat and forever remain in our hearts, minds, and souls. God Bless Dr.Kanat and his family.

Checking Medicare Eligibility (Laura R. Lefkowitz, DPM)
From:  Richard A. Simmons DPM

Dr. Lefkowitz wants to know of a site on-line to check for Medicare eligibility. To my knowledge, CMS does not allow direct access to this site; however, there are companies, such as CheckMedicare.com that will provide you access to the CMS site for a fee. The CMS site that one can access through CheckMedicare.com provides a wealth of information, and you can print this information (hard copy or with a pdf writer) for chart access.

I grew tired of receiving those Overpayment Requests from CMS that contained the wording, “you knew or should have known and are therefore liable…” Most of the information is updated at CMS at the first of the month, so make sure that your report is within the same month you render services.

Checking Medicare Eligibility (Laura R. Lefkowitz, DPM)
From: Mak Yousefpour, DPM

Try Checkmedicare.com. It will give instant access to their eligibility and deductibles, along with any managed care organization they belong to. There is a set-up process, and you pay for how many patients you want to check. Currently, I pay $100 per month for 400 patients.

RESPONSES/COMMENTS (NEWS STORIES)

RE: South African Podiatrist Discusses Footwear and Pregnancy
From: Terrance Mueller, DPM

I was surprised to see propagation of the myth that the "added load" of pregnancy causes flattened "arches" of the foot!

The biomechanical explanation is that after the first or second full-term pregnancy, most women do notice an increase in shoe size. However, this is due to the effect of relaxin on the elastin fibers of the plantar calcaneonavicular ligament (relaxation of which causes talar ptosis, resulting in foot elongation at the medial column).
