Assistant's Certification in Radiology (Stephen Doms, DPM)
RE: Assistant's Certification in Radiology (Stephen Doms, DPM) From: Dennis L. White, DPM
California has formed a Radiology Task Force to evaluate, and possibly change the current requirements for podiatric medical assistants to become certified as X-ray technicians of the lower extremity. Unfortunately for you, Dr. Doms, in order to take the California State Certification test, your assistant would have to qualify by taking a course in an accredited facility or class of a minimum of 100 didactic hours, followed by "on-the-job" training for three months. Upon completion of these requirements, she/he could then take the State Exam. For obvious reasons the CPMA is actively attempting to change these requirements. We would be interested in the requirements of other States so we may present them at a hearing in the future. Please send any comments to me at the following CPMA address in Sacramento: dwhite@podiatrists.org We thank anyone who can forward us information from their State's requirements. Dennis L. I would suggest contacting Marlene Kern, RN, PRT in NJ at: markern@optonline.net for information on how to go about preparing a radiology course and exam for assistants in your state. Marlene was very successful in getting such a course put in place in her state, which as you may imagine, was a major accomplishment and did not just happen overnight. As a result of all her hard work and determination, assistants in NJ (upon taking this extensive course and passing the required test) can now actually obtain a unique license as a Podiatric Radiology Technologist (PRT). Over the years, she has willingly shared what information she could to help other states set up a similar program and I am sure she would be more than happy to do the same for you in Michigan. Good luck
