1st Met-Cuneiform Exostectomy Coding

Query: 1st Met-Cuneiform Exostectomy Coding
From: Charles Morelli, DPM; William Bradbury,
DPM

What is the correct code to use for a resection
of a metatarsal-cuneiform exostosis?

Charles Morelli DPM Mamaroneck, NY
podiodoc@optonline.net
William Bradbury, DPM Houston, TX
DocMaverick@aol.com

[Codingline-L] Response:

The proper CPT code for removal of the dorsal
exostosis of the 1st metatarsal-cuneiform joint
would be CPT 28122. Because the resection of
bone involves two contiguous bones
essentially "creating" one bone deformity, the
exostectomy code would be billed only once.

The diagnosis code for the exostosis would be
ICD-9 726.91 (exostosis of unspecified site;
bone spur NOS).
