Tarsometatarsal Fusion

Query: Tarsometatarsal Fusion

CPT 28740 is described as "arthrodesis,
midtarsal or tarsometatarsal, single joint". Is
this the appropriate code to be used when fusing
a 1st metatarsal-cuneiform joint with painful
symptomatic osteoarthritis when not performing a
Lapidus-type bunionectomy?

Codingline Response:CPT 28740 would be the
appropriate code to bill for a fusion of the 1st
metatarsal-cuneiform joint.

If a Lapidus-type bunionectomy procedure was
performed, the arthrodesis of the 1st met base
and medial cuneiform would be included in the
global definition of CPT 28297.
